Music in the Brain

Prof. Petr Janata, Ph.D.,
Center for Mind and Brain, University of California Davis, USA

There are many different types of musical behaviors and experiences, from having the urge to move along with music, to having music stuck in our minds, to reliving nostalgic memories when hearing a song from our past. There is no single music region of the brain that enables these diverse experiences. Rather, these experiences necessarily depend on interacting brain systems that underlie mechanisms of perception, action, memory, attention, and emotion which support behavior more generally. I will provide and overview of how core aspects of this functional neuroanatomical organization support relevant musical functions and experiential states.
